My Story

Every good story starts with a question.  Two questions consistently guide my creative work, “what inspires me,” and “what meaningful contribution can I make?”

As a freelance journalist, I specialize in arts, culture and travel, and I'm a regular contributor to the Chicago Tribune, the Pioneer Press, and to a variety of magazines that include, Inspired Living, Lakeland Boating and Shore.

As an accomplished documentary and fine art photographer I am the author of “Between Cultures: Children of Immigrants in America,” a major still-photographic documentary project and winner of the International Sister Cities Multicultural Book award.  I am also a  contributing photographer on other photographic book monographs that include -- “Chicago Portfolio: Where  Geography & Photography Meet,” published by the Henry Holt & Company and “The Spirit of Family,” published by the Center for American Places, Inc.

My photographic work has appeared in a vast array of solo exhibitions at venues that include the The Ellis Island Immigration History Museum in New York City, The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, The New Americans Museum in San Diego, and a year-long exhibition in the International Terminal of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, among many others.

As a teacher of the visual art of photography I have designed and taught adult continuing education courses for the University of Chicago's Graham School, Northwestern University, Loyola University, and in Italy, for Il Chiostro's Tuscan Renaissance Center at San Fedele, and for the Fine & Performing Arts Florence Program of Columbia College Chicago.

I continue to serve as Adjunct Professor of Photography, in the School of Visual and Performing Arts of Columbia College Chicago, as I have for the past twenty years, where I earned an M.F.A. in Fine Art Photography in 1998.
